Portia Tsotesi, PTA
Licensed Physical Therapy Assistant
6+ years experience
Portia Tsotesi chose to practice in the field of physical therapy after her grandmother suffered two strokes while living in a remote rural area. "She had no access to the physical therapy she needed, and she never walked again," remembers Portia. The first woman Portia worked with during her physical therapy training was a woman who had also had a stroke. "My life was changed while working with her. To see the many things we could do to help her regain her strength and function was unbelievable to me. I love this field because it's a business of helping people."
Portia holds a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Los Angeles, 2005 and an Associate in Arts degree in physical therapy from Cerritos College, 2013. She was on the Dean's List, was Valedictorian, and received the prestigious Outstanding Clinical Achievement Award.
Portia started in 2008 at Torrance Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Group as a therapy aide, then became the therapy aide supervisor, and is now a licensed PTA. She chose TOSMG because "they encourage me to realize my full potential," she says. "I get to be an educator, a cheerleader, a coach, and a motivator. I've learned new levels of patience, kindness, and humility." Because physical therapy also encompasses emotional and psychological aspects, Portia encourages patients to remember their goals when they're feeling discouraged.
Portia was born in South Africa and moved to the U.S. when she was 12. She likes to travel, work out, teach fitness boot camps, read, and eat vegetarian cuisine. Portia is a lifelong athlete. Growing up she played soccer and lacrosse and ran track and field, and today works out 4-6 days a week.
